Academic Justice

Our academic justice programs are focused on addressing the literacy needs of youth of color in urban schools. More specifically, our premier program, the Black Male Youth Academy works to improve the academic outcomes of African American male youth as well as develop critical consciousness. Furthermore, we offer college preparation courses and programming (including college tours) to students throughout the community.

Our Impact

Food Justice Highlights

  • We currently serve 2500 students and community members through our community garden and food justice efforts.
  • Students and community members are taking food home, harvesting in gardens, creating and participating in events.
Our students efforts helped feed families in need throughout the year.
  • We're developing a distribution network throughout the City of Inglewood and Los Angeles to deliver healthy food to families in need (currently have at least four sites including: Warren Lane Elementary, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Center, Morningside High School and LA Care)

Black Male Youth Academy (BMYA)

At Morningside High School, our Urban Scholars program is called the Black Male Youth Academy (“BMYA”). As many of us are well aware, African-American male youth face high imprisonment, recidivism and death rates. Schools contribute to this negative cycle of social reproduction through consistent deculturalization, reduced financial resources and the lack of a culturally relevant teaching/learning style. In order to reverse this cycle, African-American male youth must be immersed in a schooling experience that is humanizing, values their cultural heritage and creates strong opportunities for academic achievement.
