Using action research, Urban Scholars students experience humanizing education and receive encouragement for academic success. We believe our program provides opportunities for each student to go to the college or university of their choice while becoming change agents in their community. We believe opportunities for academic development promotes their ability to be self-starters and their leadership, in turn, helps inspire others to achieve as well. Youth participate in activities that build community and add value to their environment through neighborhood projects and school beautification projects. With a focus on access to higher education, this program provides youth with the tools they need to return to their neighborhoods and assist with the holistic development of their community, as well as, work to eradicate negative social cycles. After students develop their research plan, they present it to potential collaborators to implement their ideas for change.
When students move from research to action, new and exciting programs emerge that support and engage the community in collaborative change.
