In our effort to address the multiple food security needs of the Inglewood and south Los Angeles communities and tackle the challenges of living within a food desert, with the youth from the Black Male Youth Academy (BMYA), our organization has launched 100 Seeds Of Change, a comprehensive Inglewood based local organic food system initiative.
The purpose of this initiative is to develop a local sustainable organic food system that is managed and scaled to meet the health, consumption and active living needs of Inglewood and south Los Angeles residents. With 100 community, school, and home urban gardens, we intend to meet the ever increasing need for nutritious foods in our communities by promoting local production by local empowered youth and residents.
Educating residents about the importance of creating a healthy and sustainable lifestyle in the community in order to curb the epidemic of food related diseases that exists is an initial priority that has to be achieved in order for this work to be successful. We have developed cirrocumulus that not only educate the residents about these issues but also empower them to be major parts of the solution that is 100 Seeds Of Change.
Developing a healthy lifestyle can be very difficult, especially when trying to figure it out on your own. In this workshop, Health Net - California will be teaching the keys to good nutrition and demonstrating physical activities that will help guide you to a happier, healthier future.
After learning the great information about nutrition with Health Net- California, this class provided by SJLI’s F2P Culinary Club will showcase different recipes with hand on training on how to prepare them. This class give the residents extra tools to put their new found nutritional education into action.
Do you have or are you interested in having a fruit or shade tree in your back yard? Want to find out how to take care of it? Join the trainers from TreePeople as the give the 1-2-3’s of tree ownership, starting at digging a hole all the way to how to harvest the fruits of your labor.
Food security can start in your own back yard, on your patio, or even your window sill. All it takes is a little know how, patience, and support. We at SJLI will show you that you don’t need to have the largest yard space to grow your own food. In this workshop you will learn the basics of gardening and start on your path to being an urban farmer.
